A gem in the Third Ward that has stood the test of time, Cream Burger has been a neighborhood staple for just over 6 decades serving up some of the most affordable burgers in the city. At just a couple of outdoor tables and walk-up window service, it would be fair to suggest that there is really nothing fancy about the place. That's precisely why I love it. I am willing to guess that a bulk of their business is take-out considering the flurry of cars + people going in and out of the joint. On the best weather days where sitting outside is doable, I'd reckon most everyone else is either eating in their car or taking the food home with them. The menu is simple. It's just two burgers (hamburger + chili burgers) with the option of cheese along with the equivalent in hot dog form. There are also the same options for fries with a few ice cream choices. The burgers themselves aren't likely to win any awards, but the novelty of having a place that exudes nostalgia is sometimes enough. The most indulgent approach is to throw in cheese, chili, with bacon ($1.50 extra), and make it a double patty. That will result in the most expensive item they offer, which is a whopping $7.70. For the fries, chili with cheese makes them instantly messier, but I prefer them plain and the complement the burgers and hot dogs perfectly. Some folks long for the frito pie version, which is also a nice treat. A hard recommendation for the burgers + fries over the hot dog route. Something that often gets neglected is their shakes, which come in chocolate, vanilla, pineapple, and cookies and cream. It's a lovely way to cool off during hot weather months, including their ice cream sundaes, which should only be eaten onsite. The ice cream is generic, but is thankfully one of the most affordable in town. Earlier this year they completed a major renovation which resulted in price hike, a weather proof menu and an updated storefront. It's a cash only and black owned biz, just a stone's throw away from the University of Houston campus. This is a perfect place to appreciate the longevity of a locally owned biz, while saving a bit of money without ruining one's appetite.

My fellow Yelp friends and I checked out Cream Burger for our monthly burger lunch. We check out popular spots as well as spots that some may never hear about. The latter is what Cream Burger is. I never heard of it before. It's been around for awhile and looks like a mom and pop shop. It's centrally located near East Downtown, right across from U of H. It's a hole in the wall kind of spot and to me those are the best places. There's nothing fancy about it. There is no dining area other than a couple of tables outside that are covered by a tin roof. You order at a barred up window and wait for your number to be called. There isn't much to the menu which I wasn't mad at. That just means they do those few items well. You have hamburgers, cheeseburgers, chili cheeseburgers, hot dogs and sides. The burgers come in different size options. I went with a large cheeseburger with added bacon, a small fry and a soda. I'm guessing they make the burgers to order as it takes a little bit of time. The food was served in a brown bag and each items was wrapped up nicely. The burger was a nice size and reminded me of a nice homemade burger. I wish they listed what they had on the burgers. The only modification I made was to omit pickles. What I didn't know is that they only do mustard or atleast that's all I tasted. I like mayo with just a little mustard. That being said, the burger was still good. The meat was seasoned nicely and all the toppings tasted fresh. I think the bacon was a wise choice. The fries tasted good. I don't know if they are hand cut or frozen. Overall, my visit here was successful. I wouldn't say the burger is mind blowing or the best burger I ever had, but a solid burger nonetheless. The prices here are definitely a plus as well. I would come back if in the area.

Small business that is originally and tasteful every time. I love the price and down to earth service. I can say that every time I order and eat a burger, it tastes like my grandmother's old-fashioned hamburger straight from her kitchen. I love the it So go check them out, plus they open late.
